NSN (National Stock Number)

What is an NSN (National Stock Number)?

A National Stock Number (NSN) is a unique 13-digit numeric code used to identify standardized material items of supply within the military and federal supply system. Managed by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), NSNs are used by the United States Department of Defense and NATO countries to facilitate the procurement, storage, and distribution of items ranging from equipment and supplies to spare parts and consumables. The NSN system ensures uniformity and efficiency in logistics and inventory management across military and government operations.

Structure of a National Stock Number

13-Digit Code

The NSN is composed of 13 digits, divided into three parts:

  1. Federal Supply Class (FSC): The first four digits represent the Federal Supply Class, which categorizes the item based on its function or physical characteristics.
  2. Country Code: The next two digits indicate the country of origin or the country that manages the item. For the United States, this number is typically “00” or “01.”
  3. Item Identification Number: The final seven digits are a unique identifier for the specific item, distinguishing it from other items within the same class.

Example

An example of an NSN might be 1234-00-567-8901, where “1234” is the FSC, “00” is the country code, and “567-8901” is the unique item identification number.

Importance of NSNs in Government and Military Logistics

Standardization

NSNs provide a standardized system for identifying and categorizing items, ensuring consistency across various branches of the military and government. This standardization simplifies the procurement process and reduces errors in ordering and inventory management.

Efficiency

By using NSNs, logistics and supply chain operations become more efficient. The system allows for quick and accurate identification of items, streamlining the ordering, shipping, and inventory processes.

Interoperability

NSNs are used by NATO and other allied countries, facilitating interoperability and collaboration in joint operations. The common system ensures that all parties can identify and procure items efficiently, supporting mission readiness and operational success.
